Overview

I was tasked with redesigning an existing structure into a new 5-star destination while retaining its framework. To address seasonal flooding, I elevated the floor by just over a meter, ensuring the lodge remains habitable during the rainy season.

Challanges

Flood Mitigation

To prevent annual flooding from rendering the public areas uninhabitable, I needed to elevate the entire floor area by over a meter.

Entrance Reconfiguration

I re-evaluated the overall space planning to work within the existing structure while creating a strong sense of arrival.

Interior Transformation

The interiors needed a complete redesign to establish four distinct areas: Reception, Lounge, Bar, and Restaurant. This also required the addition of an outdoor lounge.

Dining & Pool Experience

The restaurant was to be designed with both indoor and outdoor dining options, leading to a pool area inviting guests to experience the outdoors during the day and in the evenings.

Solutions

Flood Mitigation & Structural Adaptation

To ensure the lodge remained habitable year-round, I elevated the entire floor area by over a meter, protecting the public spaces from seasonal flooding. This adjustment allowed the existing structure to be preserved while enhancing its resilience against environmental challenges.

Entrance Reconfiguration & Spatial Flow

A complete re-evaluation of the space planning was necessary to work within the existing framework while improving guest experience. I repositioned the entrance to create a stronger sense of arrival and removed all windows and doors to enhance spatial flow, allowing for a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas.

Interior Redesign & Guest Experience

The interiors were transformed to establish four distinct areas: Reception, Lounge, Bar, and Restaurant. Additionally, I introduced an outdoor lounge to extend the experience beyond the built environment. The new layout allows guests to take in the breathtaking views of the Chobe River while sitting under magnificent trees, offering them the opportunity to observe elephant herds across the water.

Dining & Pool Integration

The restaurant was designed to feature both indoor and outdoor dining, seamlessly extending toward a vanishing-edge pool that visually merges with the Chobe River. This enhances the lodge’s connection to its natural surroundings. A closable buffet area was incorporated to remain hidden when à la carte service is offered, maintaining a refined and adaptable dining atmosphere.
